Period style homes

Period-style homes – also known as heritage or country-style homes – typically evoke the sense of a bygone era of elegance, grace and grandeur. Today, the term ‘period-style home’ usually refers to properties built prior to World War Two that reflect a design trend of a particular time, such as Edwardian, Boom style, Victorian, Federation or inter-war, for instance.

With period-style homes ultimately encompassing a large number of different styles and eras, the definitive characteristics of a period-style property can be broad. Regardless of the period employed for inspiration, there are some features we recommend you consider for your period-style home, including:

  • Wide and spacious hallways – with plaster arches and corbels or timber fretwork, patterned tiles to the entry are also a common feature.
  • Feature windows – stained glass, leadlight or curved windows add immediate period-style flavour to any home.
  • Gable Roofs – with decorative vents or strapping
  • Fireplaces – whether intended for use or purely for visual appeal, fireplaces, surrounds and mantles are a key inclusion in any period-style luxury home
  • High, ornate ceilings – nothing says ‘period-style’ like high ceilings and decorative ceiling roses and cornices
  • Timber floors – Baltic pine, oak or hardwood floors are the best choices for period style homes, in terms of durability and the right period-style feel
  • A verandah – the idea features for the perfect, period-style first impression
  • Picture rails – Highly popular in the 19th Century, original or reproduction picture rails, dado rails and two tone paint colours for the walls will add a practical charm to your period- style home.
